Maldives: when to go and what to experience

Low coral atolls scattered across the Indian Ocean, where resort islands share lagoons with fishing villages, coral-stone mosques and some of the world’s great manta gatherings.

In brief

In brief

In the Maldives the dry northeast monsoon runs from December to the end of March; from late April to October the southwest monsoon brings stronger winds and showers. Beyond the resort islands, see local life too: Malé's coral-stone Old Friday Mosque, a mas huni breakfast and, in Baa Atoll, the manta gathering at Hanifaru Bay, timed to the tides.

In Malé, seek out the Old Friday Mosque, completed in 1658, with its lacquered woodwork and a cemetery of intricately carved 17th-century tombstones around the minaret.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Check your resort transfer before booking flights: nearby atolls use speedboats, mid-distance ones seaplanes, and the farthest a domestic flight plus a boat. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, so a late landing at Velana may mean a night near the airport.
  • Order mas huni for breakfast at a local café or guesthouse: finely chopped tuna, onion and chilli mixed with grated coconut, eaten with warm roshi flatbread and sweet tea.
  • In Baa Atoll, plan a Hanifaru Bay visit around the tide: when it pushes plankton into the small inlet, up to a hundred manta rays can gather in one of the world’s largest aggregations.
  • The Old Friday Mosque is built of interlocking Porites coral blocks: the coral is soft and easy to cut when wet, then hardens into sturdy stone as it dries.
