Hidden places

Off Mahébourg, take a guided visit to Île aux Aigrettes, a nature reserve since 1965, where restored coastal ebony forest shelters pink pigeons, Telfair's skinks and Aldabra tortoises standing in for the extinct native giants.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Choose your base with the airport in mind: it lies in the south-east, close to Mahébourg and Blue Bay, while the north coast around Grand Baie is about 75 km away, so allow roughly 90 minutes by road, longer near Port Louis at rush hour.
  • At Port Louis Central Market, try alouda: a cold milk drink with basil seeds and cubes of agar jelly, usually flavoured with almond or vanilla, and a Mauritian answer to the afternoon heat.
  • At Maha Shivaratri, in February or March, close to half a million pilgrims walk to the crater lake of Grand Bassin carrying handmade kanwars; the roads to the south fill with processions for days.
  • On the Port Louis waterfront, Aapravasi Ghat, the UNESCO-listed Immigration Depot, received half a million Indian indentured labourers between 1849 and 1923, the roots of many Mauritian families.
