Seychelles

The Seychelles is a granitic and coral archipelago of endemic forests, sculpted beaches and Creole island communities within highly protected ecosystems.

Hidden places

On Mahé, follow the Anse Major trail from Danzil through Morne Seychellois National Park, past granite slabs and sea views, to a cove with no road access.

April to May and October to November often bring calmer transitions; wind, swell and rain vary between island sides.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Hop between the main islands by sea: a fast ferry links Mahé with Praslin in roughly an hour, and a short ferry crosses from Praslin to La Digue in about 15 minutes; flights to Praslin are the alternative.
  • Try ladob, the Creole dish of plantain, breadfruit or cassava simmered in coconut milk with nutmeg and vanilla; the savoury version uses salted fish instead of sugar.
  • At Anse Source d’Argent on La Digue, reached through L’Union Estate, watch the tide: the shallow lagoon nearly drains at low water, so swim nearer high tide.
  • In Praslin’s Vallée de Mai, a UNESCO site, the endemic coco de mer palm grows the largest seed of any plant; in the wild it is found only on Praslin and Curieuse.
