Milan is famous for its cathedral, fashion and shopping, but the details that save a trip often don't make the postcards. Here are seven practical things worth knowing before you leave.

1. You cannot just walk in to see The Last Supper

Admission to Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece at the Cenacolo Vinciano requires an advance timed reservation for everyone, even for free tickets. The visit lasts only 15 minutes, and the museum asks visitors to arrive 30 minutes early. Late arrival can mean losing your admission.

2. Sold out? Check the official site again

Ticket availability is updated daily. The museum also releases additional tickets on Wednesdays at 12:00 noon for the following week through its official online booking platform. Availability is never guaranteed.

3. The Duomo and its rooftop are different experiences

The cathedral's terraces offer a striking view of the spires and the city. Ticket categories and inclusions vary: check the official Duomo website rather than assuming one entry ticket includes everything.

4. Those green street fountains have drinkable water

Milan's distinctive cast-iron 'vedovelle' or 'green dragons' are public drinking fountains. According to the official tourism website, the water is safe to drink. Bring a refillable bottle.

5. Mondays are not automatically museum days

Several major museums, including the Cenacolo Vinciano, close on Mondays. Others have different schedules. Check each attraction's official opening hours and any free-admission days individually.

6. There is a quieter, stranger Milan beyond the square

Consider San Bernardino alle Ossa's unusual ossuary or Villa Necchi Campiglio, both highlighted in YesMilano's hidden-gems guide. Check opening hours and tickets before setting off.

7. Navigli feels different by day and by night

Visit earlier for a calmer canal walk, or around sunset for cafés and aperitivo. An aperitivo can mean just a drink with small bites or a more generous food offering; check what the price actually includes.

The Travel by Ildy tip

Book the timed-entry attractions first, then leave room for wandering. A quiet street, courtyard or unplanned evening walk may become your favourite Milan memory.
