In short
- In the EU/EEA roaming works like at home, subject to a fair-use policy.
- Outside the EU/EEA (the UK, Switzerland, Türkiye, Egypt …) other rules and prices apply.
- Install the eSIM before you leave on Wi-Fi and switch it on only at your destination.
Roaming in and outside the EU
Under the EU roaming regulation you can use your home plan in the EU and EEA at no extra charge, within your operator’s fair-use rules. The regulation runs until 2032. Outside the EU prices differ by operator: check your operator’s roaming zones before you go.
When a travel eSIM makes sense
- At non-EU destinations where roaming is pricey and you mainly need data.
- On longer trips or across several countries: look at regional plans.
- Buy only from a reputable provider and read the validity, hotspot rules and whether a phone number is included.
Setting it up
- Check that your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to a network.
- Install it via QR code or app on Wi-Fi before you leave.
- Turn off data roaming on your main SIM and set the eSIM for mobile data. Keep your main SIM on for bank SMS codes and ask your operator about the cost of receiving them.
Checklist
- Phone eSIM-capable and unlocked?
- Roaming zones and prices checked?
- Data alert and limit set?
