Four Canary Islands worth comparing
Tenerife South: 22.8°C average daily maximum in December at the airport weather station. The sunny south coast is a good base for walks and beach time, though the Atlantic is not summer-warm.
Gran Canaria: 22.2°C average December daily maximum at the airport station. The south coast around Maspalomas can feel different from the wetter or cooler inland areas.
Fuerteventura: 22.0°C average maximum. Expect open landscapes, long beaches and potentially noticeable wind.
Lanzarote: 21.8°C average maximum. A strong choice for volcanic scenery, coastal walks and milder winter days.
What about other European destinations?
Madeira, especially around Funchal, can be mild in December and is excellent for gardens, coastal towns and walking; mountain weather is much cooler and wetter. Unlike a Canary Islands beach break, a hiking-focused trip benefits from flexible plans.
Malta is a better winter city-break than a reliable 20°C beach holiday: the official 1991–2020 climatology puts its average December daily maximum at 17.1°C. Cyprus, Andalusia and the Algarve can be pleasant for sightseeing, but a 20°C day there is not a daily guarantee.
What the numbers actually mean
These are long-term averages of daytime highs, not the full-day average or a forecast for your dates. December nights are cooler, local microclimates vary, and wind or rain can change the experience. Swimming comfort and sea temperature are separate questions.
How to travel for less
Compare departures from both Budapest and Vienna, vary travel dates by a few days, avoid the Christmas/New Year peak if possible, and compare the total cost including bags, transfer and accommodation. Do not assume the Canary Islands always cost less than other regions—check real quotes before booking.
