Zanzibar

Zanzibar blends Swahili stone towns, spice-growing interiors, coral coasts and a living Muslim island culture shaped by Indian Ocean trade.

Hidden places

In Jozani–Chwaka Bay, Zanzibar's only national park, walk the forest to meet the Zanzibar red colobus, a monkey found nowhere else on earth, then continue to the mangroves that fringe Chwaka Bay.

June to October and January to February are generally drier; tides strongly shape swimming and boat access on many coasts.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Zanzibar’s airport is only about 7 km from Stone Town, so a short taxi ride gets you to the old town; arrange your onward transfer to the beach resorts separately.
  • Go to Forodhani Gardens in Stone Town after sunset, when the seafront in front of the Old Fort turns into a food market: grilled seafood, samosas, cassava and sweet potatoes cooked on the spot.
  • On the east coast at Jambiani, check the tide table and walk out at low tide, when the sea retreats far enough to reveal the rows of the village's seaweed farms on the flats.
  • Read Stone Town's carved doors rather than reducing them to one shape: UNESCO documents Omani influence in intricately carved square wooden doors and Indian/Gujarati influence in four-leaf shopfront doors; the brass knobs seen on many doors came through Indian tradition and became decorative status symbols in Zanzibar.
