From New England harbour towns to Southwestern canyons and Pacific cities, the United States rewards depth over distance: choose one region and travel it slowly.

Take the passenger ferry from St. Marys, Georgia, to Cumberland Island National Seashore, where feral horses roam among live oaks and the ruins of the Carnegies' Dungeness mansion.

May–June and September–October suit most regions, with milder desert heat and autumn colour in the north-east; on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, hurricane season runs June to November.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Remember the scale: the lower 48 states span four time zones, so a coast-to-coast itinerary eats whole days; pick one or two regions per trip and fly the long legs rather than driving them.
  • In New Mexico in late summer, follow the smell of roasting drums: Hatch green chile is harvested in August and roasted outside markets, then folded into stews, enchiladas and breakfast burritos.
  • Cross the Rockies on Amtrak's California Zephyr westbound from Denver and claim a seat in the Sightseer Lounge; Glenwood Canyon and the climb over Donner Pass are best seen through its tall windows.
  • On the Lincoln Memorial steps, look for the engraved 'I Have a Dream' marker: it shows the exact spot where Martin Luther King Jr. stood on 28 August 1963.
