Hidden places

On Istanbul’s Asian shore, wander Kuzguncuk, a Bosphorus village of wooden houses where a mosque and an Armenian church stand side by side, near a Greek church and the Beth Yaakov synagogue.

April to May and September to October suit many cultural routes; coast, high plateau and eastern mountains require separate timing.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • In Istanbul, use one Istanbulkart for metro, tram, ferry, funicular and bus; take the T1 tram for Sultanahmet and Marmaray to cross the Bosphorus underwater, and the M11 metro from Istanbul Airport to Gayrettepe.
  • Eat baklava in Gaziantep: Antep baklava, made with local pistachios, butter and paper-thin pastry, became the first Turkish product registered as an EU protected geographical indication in 2013.
  • Skip the private cruise and ride a public Şehir Hatları ferry up the Bosphorus from Eminönü; the long line heads towards the Black Sea mouth, so check whether your sailing calls at Anadolu Kavağı.
  • Near Şanlıurfa, Göbekli Tepe’s carved T-shaped pillars date to about 9,600–8,200 BC — some 6,000 years older than Stonehenge — and the site has been UNESCO-listed since 2018.
