Tunisia combines Mediterranean medinas and beaches with Roman landscapes, oasis towns and desert-edge cultures across a compact north–south route.

Highlights

Drive inland to Dougga, a UNESCO-listed Numidian and Roman town set among olive groves, where the Capitol, the theatre and a Libyco-Punic mausoleum stand far from the coastal crowds.

March to May and October to November suit cities, ruins and desert edges; midsummer heat is intense inland.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Reach Carthage and Sidi Bou Said on the TGM, the suburban light-rail line from Tunis Marine to La Marsa; check the stop names, as the L’Aéroport station is not at the airport.
  • Taste harissa where it belongs: Tunisia's chilli paste with garlic, caraway and coriander, inscribed by UNESCO in 2022 as intangible heritage; recipes differ by household and region, so try more than one.
  • Visit the amphitheatre of El Jem early in the day, before the heat; built around AD 238 for some 35,000 spectators, it is one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world.
  • In Matmata, Berber families dug their homes around deep pits in the ground; the Hotel Sidi Driss, built this way, became Luke Skywalker's home on Tatooine in the first Star Wars film.
