Tre Cime di Lavaredo

The three monumental limestone towers of the Dolomites create one of the Alps' most recognisable and cinematic mountain landscapes.

Continue beyond Forcella Lavaredo to Rifugio Locatelli: the north faces appear suddenly, and the two small Laghi dei Piani below the hut add a quieter second viewpoint.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Without a car, look for the seasonal shuttle buses to Rifugio Auronzo, the usual starting point for the Tre Cime circuit: they run from Misurina and from Toblach/Dobbiaco. Check the current schedule and the last return bus before you set off.
  • Down in Cortina d'Ampezzo, order casunziei all'ampezzana: half-moon pasta filled with red and yellow turnip or beetroot, served with melted butter, poppy seeds and Parmesan.
  • A night in a rifugio changes everything: the loop is almost silent before the first cars climb the toll road from Misurina to Rifugio Auronzo; check the current access and reservation rules before you go.
  • On Monte Paterno, beside the Tre Cime, the Sexten mountain guide Sepp Innerkofler was killed on 4 July 1915 trying to retake the summit; the Locatelli hut also carries his name.
