Switzerland

Switzerland combines high Alpine routes, lake cities, multilingual regions and precise public transport with strongly local food traditions.

Landscapes

In Val Bregaglia, stay in Soglio, a stone village on a terrace at about 1,090 m facing the granite of Piz Badile and the Sciora group; Segantini called it the threshold to paradise.

June to September suits high trails; May and October work lower down, while January to March is the main snow season.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • If you plan several rides, look at the Swiss Half Fare Card: it gives non-residents half-price travel on trains, buses, boats and most mountain railways for a month, while the Swiss Travel Pass adds free travel and museum entry.
  • In Valais, order raclette made from Raclette du Valais AOP, a raw-milk cheese matured for at least three months on spruce boards; its flavour shifts with each alpine pasture.
  • On the Bernina line between St. Moritz and Tirano, ride the RhB regional trains instead of the panoramic express: same route, no compulsory reservation and windows that open for photographs.
  • In Guarda in the Lower Engadine, read the sgraffito façades of the old Engadine houses; the village is the setting of Schellen-Ursli, and on 1 March children ring bells to chase winter away.
