Travel by Ildy tips
- Fly into Burgas, about 30 km south of the resort: there is no direct public line from the airport, so take a city bus to Burgas bus station and change, or book a shared shuttle, and buses along the coast also call at Nessebar.
- At lunch, order tarator, Bulgaria's cold soup of yoghurt, cucumber, garlic and dill, sometimes with walnuts; on a hot Black Sea day it is lighter and more local than any resort menu.
- For July Morning, join Bulgarians on the beach on the night of 30 June to greet the first sunrise of July, a tradition begun in Varna in 1985 and named after Uriah Heep's 1971 song.
- In Nessebar's old town, a UNESCO site on a former island joined by a man-made isthmus, find St John Aliturgetos: 'aliturgetos' means 'not consecrated', and its façade is patterned in brick and stone.
