December to March suits the west and south coasts, the hill country and the Cultural Triangle; from about May to September the east coast is drier while the southwest monsoon hits the west.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Book a reserved seat in advance for the scenic hill-country train from Kandy to Ella rather than relying on the unreserved carriages, which can be crowded.
  • Buy true Ceylon cinnamon – Sri Lanka grows most of the world's supply – and ask for 'Alba', the finest grade of quill, rolled thinner than six millimetres.
  • Climb Adam's Peak (Sri Pada) by night during the pilgrimage season, when the thousands of steps are lit, to reach the summit shrine with its sacred footprint for sunrise.
  • On Sigiriya's mirror wall, look for verses scratched by visitors from the 8th century onward – poems about the painted maidens that are rare surviving poetry of their time.
