Highlights

On False Bay, linger at Kalk Bay harbour when the small boats come in: fishermen gut the morning's snoek and yellowtail on the quay while Cape fur seals wait for scraps.

May to September is the dry season for Kruger game viewing; the Western Cape shines from November to March, while August–September brings Namaqualand flowers and Hermanus whales.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • From O.R. Tambo International Airport, take the Gautrain: the airport line runs to Sandton in about 15 minutes, and from there you can change for Johannesburg’s Park Station or on towards Pretoria.
  • Drive north to Clanwilliam in the Cederberg, the only region where rooibos grows, and taste it at a tea house or farm where the red bush is harvested and fermented.
  • In Namaqualand's flower season, wait until late morning: the daisies open only in sunshine and turn towards the sun, so drive with the sun behind you to see the fields face-on.
  • Hermanus has the world's only whale crier: in season he walks the cliff path and blows a kelp horn in a code that tells onlookers where the southern right whales are.
