Snowdonia / Eryri

Rugged Welsh peaks, glacial lakes and shifting cloud give Eryri a deeply atmospheric mountain character.

Late spring to early autumn offers the longest daylight, but mountain weather remains changeable year-round.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Leave the car behind and use the Sherpa’r Wyddfa bus network, which links Llanberis, Pen-y-Pass, Beddgelert, Caernarfon and Betws-y-Coed, so you can start on one path and finish on another.
  • In a village tearoom, ask for bara brith – 'speckled bread' in Welsh – a fruit loaf whose dried fruit is often soaked overnight in tea before baking.
  • Plan the Snowdon Mountain Railway from Llanberis for between mid-March and October: it closes in winter, and in high wind or poor weather trains may stop short of the summit.
  • Inside Elidir Fawr, in the old Dinorwic slate quarry, lies 'Electric Mountain': a hydro power station in tunnels and caverns, where water drops from Marchlyn Mawr to Llyn Peris.
