Slovenia

Slovenia links Alpine lakes, karst caves, a short Adriatic coast and a green capital through distances small enough for slow regional travel.

For Bled's classic view, climb Mala Osojnica above the lake: from the top, the island church, the castle on its cliff and the Julian Alps line up in a single frame.

May to June and September suit lakes, coast and hiking; high mountain routes depend on snow conditions into summer.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Add the Škocjan Caves, a UNESCO site about 30 km by road from Postojna; they are quite different from Postojna’s, with a vast underground canyon, and the nearest station, Divača, lies on the Ljubljana–Trieste line.
  • Taste kremna rezina at the Hotel Park in Bled, where chef Ištvan Lukačević introduced the recipe in 1953; millions of these custard-and-cream slices have been baked there since.
  • In Ljubljana, come to the Central Market on a weekday or Saturday morning: Plečnik's riverside colonnades, UNESCO-listed since 2021, hold the fish market below and bakery and dairy stalls above; it closes on Sundays.
  • In Postojna Cave, look for the olm, the blind, pale cave salamander locals call the 'human fish'; scientists estimate it can live for more than a century.
