In Banská Štiavnica, climb the Calvary on Scharffenberg hill, a late-Baroque ensemble of chapels and three churches, including the Holy Stairs, built by Jesuits between 1744 and 1751.

May–June and September suit towns and lower trails; the higher High Tatra trails close from 1 November to mid-June, so July to October is the window for ridges and peaks.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Get around the High Tatras on the Tatra Electric Railway, the narrow-gauge line linking Poprad, Starý Smokovec and Štrbské Pleso, with a branch to Tatranská Lomnica; it saves driving and parking at the trailheads.
  • Order bryndzové halušky in a salaš: potato dumplings with Slovenská bryndza, a tangy sheep’s cheese protected as an EU PGI since 2008 that must contain at least half sheep’s milk, topped with crisp bacon.
  • Plan Tatra ridge hikes for July to October: the higher marked trails close from 1 November to mid-June to protect wildlife and limit avalanche risk, while trails up to the mountain huts stay open.
  • Visit an articular church such as Kežmarok, Leštiny or Hronsek: Emperor Leopold I let Protestants build them only of wood, outside the village, without a tower and within a single year.
