Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Visit the UNESCO-listed At-Turaif district in Diriyah, the mud-brick birthplace of the first Saudi state on the north-western edge of Riyadh, about half an hour from the centre by taxi or ride-hailing.
  • Accept Saudi coffee as it is offered: brewed with cardamom, poured into small handleless finjan cups and balanced with dates. Custom suggests taking three cups before you signal you have had enough.
  • Reach Al-Ahsa, the world's largest oasis with more than 2.5 million palms, by train from Riyadh to Hofuf; in the heat, step into the caves of nearby Jabal Al-Qarah, which stay around 20°C all year.
  • At Hegra near AlUla, more than 110 Nabataean tombs are carved into sandstone outcrops; in 2008 it became Saudi Arabia's first UNESCO World Heritage Site.
