Architecture

Drive to Al Zubarah on the north-west coast, Qatar's UNESCO site: the sand-preserved streets, houses and harbour of an 18th–19th-century pearling town, overlooked by a fort built in 1938 that now holds a small museum.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Reach central Doha from Hamad International Airport on the Doha Metro: the Red Line station at the airport runs straight into the city, so you can skip the taxi queue.
  • Stop for karak at a roadside tea counter: black tea simmered with cardamom, saffron, sugar and evaporated milk until it turns a deep orange — Doha's everyday drink, far from the hotel lobbies.
  • Visit Richard Serra's East-West/West-East in the Brouq reserve in the late afternoon: four steel plates over 14 metres tall cross more than a kilometre of desert, and the low sun stretches their shadows across the gypsum plain.
  • At the National Museum of Qatar, Jean Nouvel shaped the building from interlocking discs inspired by the desert rose, a crystal formed in Qatar's sands; they curl around the restored palace of Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani.
