Poland

Poland connects rebuilt historic cities, Baltic dunes, lake districts and mountain cultures with a food tradition far more varied than its best-known dumplings.

Architecture

In Zalipie, a village in Lesser Poland, cottages are traditionally painted with bright floral motifs inside and out; the former home of folk artist Felicja Curyłowa shows the custom at its finest.

May to June and September suit cities and nature; the Baltic peaks in midsummer and mountain winters require separate planning.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Take PKP Intercity for long hops between cities such as Warsaw and Kraków, and check at booking whether your train needs a seat reservation: on the Pendolino-operated EIP services it is mandatory.
  • In the Tatras, look for oscypek, the smoked sheep's-milk cheese made only in the region under EU protected-origin rules; it is often grilled and served with cranberry jam (żurawina).
  • Be on Wrocław's Cathedral Island (Ostrów Tumski) at dusk: it is one of the few places in Europe where a lamplighter still lights the gas street lamps by hand every evening.
  • Look down as you walk Wrocław: around a thousand small bronze dwarfs hide in its streets, a tradition rooted in the Orange Alternative, the playful anti-communist movement whose symbol was a dwarf.
