- Plan on 30 km or so between Phuket Airport in the north and Phuket Old Town; an airport bus runs to Phuket Town, from where you can transfer onward to the beaches, while a taxi or pre-booked transfer goes straight to your hotel.
- Order moo hong, Phuket’s Baba-Peranakan braised pork belly, with mee hokkien or oh-aew — dishes the island put forward when it became a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy in 2015.
- Come to Old Town on a Sunday evening, when Thalang Road closes to traffic for Lard Yai, the walking-street market of southern Thai snacks and local crafts; it runs only that one night a week.
- Old Town’s Sino-Portuguese shophouses date from the tin boom of the late 1800s to the 1930s: Chinese floor plans and roof forms, finished with European arches and shuttered windows.
