Peru connects Andean civilisations, Pacific food cities, high-altitude landscapes and Amazonian ecosystems through strong regional identities.

In Lima, walk Barranco, the bohemian seaside district of Chabuca Granda and Vargas Llosa, crossing the Puente de los Suspiros and following the Bajada de los Baños ravine down to the Pacific.

May to September is the dry season in much of the Andes, with clear mountain days; the Inca Trail closes every February for maintenance, while coast and Amazon follow their own cycles.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Let altitude shape your route: Cusco lies at about 3,400 m, while the Sacred Valley around Urubamba and Ollantaytambo is several hundred metres lower, so many travellers sleep there first and move up to Cusco once they have begun to adjust.
  • In Arequipa, lunch at a picantería — the city's tradition is protected as national cultural heritage — and order rocoto relleno, the stuffed hot pepper, with chicha made from local black corn.
  • Time a trip to Cusco's southern highlands for the second week of June, when Quechua communities renew the Q'eswachaka, the last Inca rope bridge, weaving it anew from ichu grass over the Apurímac.
  • Below the town of Maras in the Sacred Valley, around 3,000 salt pans are fed by one salty spring; families still work them under a shared system locals trace back to Inca times.
