From Solvorn, take the little ferry across the Lustrafjord, in service since 1859, to Urnes Stave Church: built around 1130, it is believed to be the oldest of its kind and has been a UNESCO site since 1979.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Ride the Flåm Railway from Myrdal down to Flåm: the 20 km line drops about 860 m to the Aurlandsfjord in around an hour, and Myrdal sits on the Bergen Line, so you can link it with Bergen or Oslo trains.
  • Taste brunost from Gudbrandsdalen: in 1863 the milkmaid Anne Hov added cream to whey and boiled it down in an iron pot, creating the firm, caramel-coloured cheese Norwegians still shave thinly onto bread.
  • See Lofoten between February and May, when cod hang on wooden racks, the hjell, to dry into stockfish in the cold sea wind; at Å the racks line the shore.
  • Between Aurland and Lærdal, the 24.5 km Lærdal Tunnel, the world's longest road tunnel, is broken by three mountain caves lit blue and yellow to evoke sunrise and ease the strain on drivers.
