Netherlands

The Netherlands is a landscape of canal cities, reclaimed land, North Sea dunes and direct, design-conscious everyday culture best explored at a slower cycling pace.

Take the free GVB ferry from behind Amsterdam Centraal to NDSM-werf, a former shipyard in Noord where vast hangars now house studios, street art and waterside cafés.

April to June and September suit cities, cycling and coast; spring flowers are beautiful but create concentrated crowds.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Take the train from Schiphol to Amsterdam Centraal: the station sits directly beneath the terminal, and the direct ride takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Tap in and out with a contactless card or phone at the gates.
  • From mid-June, look for 'Hollandse Nieuwe' at a herring stall: the new season's fish, fatty enough to earn the name, eaten with chopped onion and pickles or tucked into a broodje haring.
  • Cycle by the knooppunten, the numbered junction network: note a chain of numbers on a map and follow the green signs through dunes or polders at your own pace, no fixed tour required.
  • Look up along the Amsterdam canals: many houses lean slightly forward on purpose, so goods hoisted from the beam at the gable would not scrape the façade on their way to the attic.
