Morocco

Morocco moves from Atlantic cities and medinas to Atlas valleys, desert margins and regional craft and food traditions shaped by Amazigh, Arab and African histories.

In Rabat, enter the Kasbah des Oudayas by its Almohad gate and follow the blue-and-white lanes down to the Andalusian garden and the terrace of Café Maure above the Bou Regreg.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Cover the Atlantic corridor by train: the Al Boraq high-speed service links Tangier, Kenitra, Rabat and Casablanca in about 2 hours 10 minutes end to end. It stops at Rabat Agdal, so search from there, as Rabat Ville returns only regional trains.
  • Between Essaouira and Agadir, buy argan oil from a women's cooperative in the Arganeraie, where much of the work is still done by hand; the know-how is on UNESCO's intangible heritage list.
  • At Aït Benhaddou, sleep in the newer village across the river and cross the footbridge at first light, when the earthen ksar glows and the day trips from Marrakech have yet to arrive.
  • In Fez, the al-Qarawiyyin was founded as a mosque around 857–859 by Fatima al-Fihri, a merchant's daughter; UNESCO and Guinness cite it as the world's oldest continuously operating university.
