Montenegro

Montenegro rises quickly from the Bay of Kotor to limestone mountains, glacial lakes and old royal towns, creating dramatic contrasts over short distances.

Detour to Rijeka Crnojevića near Lake Skadar, a former Montenegrin capital whose stone arched bridge was commissioned by Prince Danilo in 1853 in memory of his father.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Fly into Tivat for the Bay of Kotor: the airport lies only about 10 km from Kotor, roughly a 15-minute drive. That makes the bay an easy base without a long road transfer from the capital’s airport.
  • Stop in Njeguši, home village of the Petrović-Njegoš dynasty, for njeguški pršut, cured with sea salt and dried in the mix of sea and mountain air over beech smoke, and the local cheese kept in oil.
  • Check the Port of Kotor’s published cruise arrival announcements and save the walled old town for a day with few or no ships in the bay.
  • Our Lady of the Rocks off Perast is an artificial islet: by tradition seafarers added a stone after each voyage, and every 22 July at sunset locals still row out in the fašinada to drop more.
