Meteora

Centuries-old monasteries rise above Thessaly on immense sandstone pillars — one of Greece's most dramatic cultural landscapes.

Historic places

From Kastraki, follow the old path to the hermit caves of Badovas, where the last of Meteora’s hermits lived and remnants of wooden ladders and scaffolding still cling to the rock.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Dress for the monasteries, which are working places of worship: cover your shoulders, and wear long trousers or a long skirt. Wraps are often lent at the entrance, but not guaranteed, so carry a light scarf or sarong in your bag.
  • Drive a few kilometres out to Agios Dimitrios, a village square ringed by Meteora-like rocks, for pies rolled from hand-stretched sheets of dough; in nearby Gavros, the Liakos family winery makes wine from the local microclimate.
  • Each monastery closes on a different weekday — the Great Meteoron usually on Tuesday — and schedules shift between summer and winter, so confirm the days locally before planning your route.
  • Until the 1920s, the monasteries were reached by retractable ladders or by nets hauled up on ropes; steps were then cut into the rock. Of more than twenty monasteries, six remain active.
