Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Take bus line 19 from Marrakech airport towards the medina: it also serves the railway station and stops at Place de Foucauld, about a minute on foot from Jemaa el-Fnaa. Petit taxis carry up to three people, so agree the fare before getting in.
  • Taste tanjia, Marrakech's own urn-cooked stew: lamb with preserved lemon, cumin and saffron, sealed in a clay urn and traditionally left to cook overnight in the embers of a hammam furnace.
  • Come to Jemaa el-Fnaa as daylight fades, when storytellers, musicians and food stalls take over – the square's oral traditions inspired UNESCO's intangible-heritage programme.
  • The Koutoubia, Marrakech's great 12th-century mosque, is named after the booksellers (kutubiyyin) who once worked at its base – as many as a hundred vendors.
