The east-coast islands are best from March to October – the northeast monsoon shuts many resorts from November to February – while the west coast, Penang and Kuala Lumpur work year-round.

  • From Kuala Lumpur International Airport, take the KLIA Ekspres to KL Sentral: the non-stop train takes about 28 minutes from KLIA Terminal 1, and about 33 from Terminal 2, and KL Sentral connects on to the city’s rail lines.
  • In Ipoh, order the town's white coffee: the beans are roasted with palm-oil margarine and served with condensed milk – the 'white' refers to the milk, not the beans.
  • For the Perhentian Islands, travel between March and October: during the northeast monsoon from November to February, most resorts and ferries stop running.
  • In Borneo's rainforest, a Rafflesia in bloom is the largest single flower on Earth – a leafless parasite whose bud takes about a year to open and smells of carrion to lure flies.
