Madagascar

Madagascar is an evolutionary world of endemic forests, highland cultures, dry southern landscapes and coastal communities separated by demanding roads.

On National Road 7, stop at Anja Community Reserve, 13 km south of Ambalavao: created in 2001 to protect the forest and give villagers an income, it has Madagascar's highest concentration of ring-tailed lemurs.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Budget for distance in days, not kilometres: the RN7 from Antananarivo to Toliara is roughly 950 km and slow, so consider domestic flights for the long legs and book ahead in peak season.
  • Order romazava, the national dish of zebu and greens served with rice; the brèdes mafana (anamalaho) buds in the broth leave a startling, tingling numbness on the tongue.
  • In the southern winter, humpback whales gather in the channel off Île Sainte-Marie to mate and calve; pair a boat outing with the island's old pirate cemetery, a reminder of its 17th-century corsair past.
  • In the highlands, families hold famadihana, the 'turning of the bones', usually every five to seven years: ancestors are rewrapped in fresh cloth and carried around the tomb to live music. Attend only if invited.
