In Vilnius Old Town, walk the short Literatų Street, whose walls carry some 200 small artworks honouring writers linked to the city — a project begun in 2009, the year Vilnius was European Capital of Culture.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Break a journey at the Hill of Crosses, about 12 km north of Šiauliai just off the A12 road, where more than 100,000 crosses have been planted. From Šiauliai take a Joniškis-bound bus to the Domantai stop and walk about 20 minutes, or go by taxi.
  • In lakeside Trakai, eat kibinai, the filled pastries of the Karaim community, whose presence in Lithuania is most closely associated with this town with its island castle.
  • Come on the Sunday nearest 4 March for Kaziuko mugė, the Saint Casimir’s Fair, when craftspeople fill Vilnius streets and sell verbos, the hand-made dried-flower Easter palms.
  • On 1 April 1997 the artists’ quarter of Užupis declared itself a republic, with its own constitution; its playful articles are displayed on a street wall in the district, which also has its own anthem and currency.
