Cross the Daugava to Āgenskalns for streets of wooden houses and its market hall, finished in 1923 – the oldest marketplace on Riga's left bank, recently restored.

May to September suits cities, coast and nature; December offers a compact winter atmosphere with very short daylight.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Take city bus 22 from Riga Airport to the centre: it is run by Rīgas Satiksme and stops near the Old Town and the bus and train stations. Check the current ticket options at the airport before you board.
  • Look for sklandrausis, the Livonian sweet rye tart filled with potato and carrot and spiced with caraway; it holds EU 'traditional speciality guaranteed' status.
  • Plan around Jāņi on 23–24 June: Latvians leave the cities for midsummer bonfires, oak-leaf wreaths and song, so Riga empties while the countryside celebrates through the night.
  • The pavilions of Riga Central Market reuse the steel frames of First World War German Zeppelin hangars – five of the few such hangars left in the world.
