Lake Garda

Mountain-backed water, elegant lakeside towns and ferry-linked villages make Lake Garda one of northern Italy's easiest scenic escapes.

Above Brenzone, follow the old mule track to Campo, a medieval hamlet abandoned in the early 20th century and now home to a single family, with the little church of San Pietro in Vincoli and olive terraces.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Use the Navigazione Laghi ferries to get around: a scheduled network of slow boats, hydrofoils and catamarans links the lake’s towns, with Desenzano, Peschiera and Riva as the main hubs. Allow time, since Desenzano to Riva takes about two hours by hydrofoil and far longer on the slow boat.
  • On the eastern shore, taste Chiaretto di Bardolino, the pale rosé made from Corvina and Rondinella grapes, ideally in Bardolino itself with a view across the water.
  • Take the cable car from Malcesine up Monte Baldo on a clear morning: on the upper section to Tratto Spino the cabins turn a full 360°, so lake and ridge pass slowly before you.
  • Limone sul Garda is famous for the lemon houses Goethe admired from his boat, yet its name probably has nothing to do with lemons: it likely comes from 'limes', boundary, or an old word for elm.
