Kalamata

Olive groves, a long urban beach and easy access to the Mani Peninsula make Kalamata a relaxed gateway to the southern Peloponnese.

Hidden places

Drive into the Mani to Old Kardamyli, where the fortified compound of the Mourtzinos-Troupakis clan keeps its 18th-century church of St Spyridon; Patrick Leigh Fermor spent his later years at nearby Kalamitsi.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Drive about 25 km north of Kalamata to Ancient Messene, a large archaeological site on the slopes of Mount Ithome; allow around 40 minutes each way from the city.
  • Buy Kalamata olives where the name is protected: almond-shaped, deep purple, from trees with leaves twice the usual size, and hand-picked because they bruise easily; elsewhere the same variety is sold as 'Kalamon'.
  • Walk the Viros Gorge from Kardamyli in summer, when its 20-kilometre bed runs dry beneath the Taygetus; in winter snowmelt and heavy rain regularly turn it into a torrent.
  • Kalamata was the first Greek city freed in the War of Independence, on 23 March 1821; at the small Byzantine church of the Holy Apostles, Mavromichalis declared the revolt.
