Japan

Japan balances dense cities, rural craft regions, sacred landscapes and an exceptionally local food culture shaped by season and prefecture.

Highlights

In Tokyo, wander Yanaka, a temple quarter on higher ground that came through the 1923 earthquake and the 1945 firebombing comparatively lightly; Yanaka Ginza's small shops keep the old shitamachi rhythm.

March to May and October to November suit many routes, but blossom and foliage peaks draw crowds and vary by latitude and altitude.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Send your suitcase ahead with takkyūbin, Japan’s door-to-door luggage forwarding: hotels and airport counters can arrange it, and bags usually arrive the next day, so pack a small overnight bag for the train.
  • In Hiroshima, order okonomiyaki the local way — built in layers on the griddle with noodles, not mixed as in Osaka — at one of the counter stalls stacked over several floors of Okonomimura.
  • Fushimi Inari in Kyoto never closes: come at first light and keep climbing past the crowded lower gates towards Yotsutsuji, where the torii tunnels thin out and the city opens below.
  • In Kanazawa, notice the gold: the city produces over 99 percent of Japan's gold leaf, a craft regulated since the Edo period; you will find it on lacquerware, floating in tea and even on ice-cream cones.
