Jamaica

Blue Mountain slopes, Maroon heartlands and reef-fringed bays — in Jamaica, music and food grow from very particular places, from Kingston’s sound systems to Portland’s jerk pits.

Hidden places

Swap Dunn’s River for Reach Falls in eastern Portland, a forest-ringed cascade in the foothills of the John Crow Mountains with a fraction of the visitors; expect wet rock and river scrambling.

December to April is the drier season; the Atlantic hurricane season runs June–November, and Blue Mountain Peak is often cold and cloud-wrapped before dawn.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Allow more time than the map suggests for crossing the island: Kingston to Montego Bay is roughly 170–190 km, with estimates of 2.5 to 4 hours. Traffic drives on the left; the Knutsford Express coach is an alternative between the main towns.
  • Eat jerk at Boston Bay in Portland, long called the birthplace of jerk, where pork and chicken are cooked over open pits on green pimento wood, from recipes traced back to the Maroons.
  • For Blue Mountain Peak, sleep at Portland Gap or Whitfield Hall and set off in the dark to reach the summit for sunrise; on rare clear mornings, Cuba appears some 90 miles (145 km) north.
  • The Blue and John Crow Mountains became a UNESCO mixed site in 2015, partly for the Nanny Town Heritage Route — trails and hideouts of the Windward Maroons who resisted colonial rule here.
