Israel

Israel brings ancient sacred landscapes, Mediterranean cities, desert ecology and layered contemporary communities into very short distances.

In Akko's old city, walk the Templars' Tunnel, a vaulted passage cut partly into bedrock that linked the Templar fortress to the port; it was rediscovered by chance only in 1994.

Spring and autumn are generally comfortable, but religious calendars, heat, security conditions and regional closures require current checks.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Plan around Shabbat: from about an hour before sundown on Friday until roughly an hour after sundown on Saturday, trains and most public transport stop, including the rail link from Ben Gurion airport to Tel Aviv, leaving taxis.
  • Drive up Mount Carmel to Daliyat al-Karmel, the largest Druze town, for paper-thin Druze pita with labneh and za'atar from the stalls along its market street.
  • From November to early March, tens of thousands of common cranes winter at Agamon Hula in the upper Galilee; come at first light, when the flocks lift off to feed.
  • Jerusalem glows the same honey colour for a reason: since a 1918 order by British governor Ronald Storrs, buildings in the city must be faced with local limestone.
