Ireland

Ireland is shaped by Atlantic roads, green interior landscapes, literary cities, island communities and a musical pub culture that rewards unhurried travel.

Landscapes

Drive the Loop Head peninsula in west Clare to its 1854 lighthouse; on a clear day you see Connemara's Twelve Bens to the north and the Blaskets to the south, and a wartime 'EIRE' sign still lies in white letters on a clifftop.

May to June and September bring long enough days with somewhat lighter visitor pressure; rain and wind remain part of every season.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • If you plan to visit several state-run heritage sites, look into the OPW Heritage Card: it gives unlimited admission to OPW-managed sites for a year from first use and can be bought online in advance.
  • In Lisdoonvarna, visit the Burren Smokehouse, the Curtin family's smokehouse; see how the salmon is smoked, then taste it before driving on into the limestone Burren.
  • Skellig Michael landings run only from about mid-May to late September, and rough seas cancel many days; book early in your trip and keep spare days so a cancellation does not end the plan.
  • At Newgrange, built around 3200 BC, a roof-box above the entrance lets the winter-solstice sunrise reach the inner chamber; places inside are drawn by lottery at the Brú na Bóinne visitor centre.
