Hungary

Hungary reaches far beyond Budapest, from Lake Balaton and historic wine regions to thermal towns, market cities and the landscapes of the Great Plain.

Historic places

Beneath the town of Tapolca, near Lake Balaton, the Lake Cave was found in 1902 when a well was dug; part of the route is covered by rowing boat over clear spring water.

April to June and September to October are comfortable for touring; summer suits Lake Balaton, while December brings atmospheric city markets and thermal-bath weather.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Plan rail trips with Budapest in mind: the MÁV network radiates from the capital, so a journey between two distant provincial towns may need a change there. Build your route around day trips and loops from Budapest.
  • In Tokaj, taste aszú inside one of the cellars cut into solid rock between 1400 and 1600; the cellar network is part of the region's UNESCO-listed cultural landscape.
  • Bathe in Hévíz out of season: Europe's largest swimmable thermal lake still holds around 24–26°C in autumn and winter, rising to 33–35°C in summer.
  • Somló's wines carry the nickname 'wine of wedding nights': old, unproven lore says they favour the birth of sons, and Habsburg rulers including Maria Theresa are said to have prized them.
