Hong Kong

A luminous harbour skyline, steep green hills and layers of Cantonese culture make Hong Kong one of Asia's most visually intense cities.

Near Tin Shui Wai MTR, walk the Ping Shan Heritage Trail, Hong Kong’s first heritage trail, past the Tang clan’s ancestral halls to Tsui Sing Lau, the city’s only surviving ancient pagoda.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Take the Airport Express to Hong Kong Station in Central, calling at Kowloon on the way; free shuttle buses run from both stations to most major hotels, so you need not carry luggage onto the MTR.
  • In Sham Shui Po, eat warm tofu pudding with a spoon of sugar at Kung Wo Beancurd Factory, making its own tofu since 1893; the deep-fried tofu and fish tofu are worth ordering too.
  • Ride the tram westbound near sunset from an upper-deck front seat: the Ding Ding has run since 1904, and it is still the world’s largest fleet of double-deck trams.
  • Poon choi, the layered basin feast of the New Territories walled villages, is tied by legend to the last Song emperor’s retreat south, when villagers pooled their food in wooden basins for his soldiers.
