- Allow two to two and a half hours for the roughly 150 km from Hanoi to Hạ Long by expressway: a day trip is possible but tiring, so a night on a boat or on Cát Bà lets you see the bay without the rush.
- In Hạ Long, taste chả mực, the local squid cake made from large fresh cuttlefish that is traditionally hand-pounded, seasoned with ingredients such as onion, garlic and pepper, shaped into patties and fried until golden; locals commonly eat it with steamed rice rolls or sticky rice.
- Start from Cat Ba to explore Lan Ha Bay, the southern continuation of the karst seascape, rather than joining the main departures from Hạ Long city's harbour.
- Hạ Long means 'descending dragon': legend says a family of dragons sent to defend Vietnam spat out jewels and jade that became the bay's islands.
