- Before booking an island ferry from Athens, check the departure port on your ticket: most Cyclades routes leave from Piraeus, but Rafina serves Andros, Tinos and Mykonos, and Lavrio serves Kea and Kythnos. The ports lie far apart.
- On Chios, visit the southern mastic villages, where mastiha resin is scraped from lentisk trees; in Pyrgi, buy it as a liqueur or sweet among houses patterned with grey-and-white xysta.
- Spend Holy Saturday in Corfu Town: when the bells ring for the 'First Resurrection' in the late morning, residents hurl water-filled clay pots, botides, from their balconies.
- In Nafplio, the first capital of modern Greece, look by the door of Agios Spyridon for the framed mark said to be left by a bullet when Ioannis Kapodistrias was assassinated there in 1831.
