Germany

Germany moves between creative metropolises, medieval towns, forest and river landscapes and regional food cultures that change from north to south.

In Essen, ride the long escalator into the former coal-washing plant of Zollverein, a UNESCO site since 2001, now home to the Ruhr Museum; in winter the coking plant's channel becomes an ice rink.

May to June and September suit cities, rivers and hiking; December is atmospheric for historic centres but requires early accommodation planning.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Stock up before Sunday: in Germany shops, including supermarkets, are closed on Sundays and public holidays. Only shops at train stations, airports and petrol stations, plus bakeries for a few hours and restaurants, are generally open.
  • In Bamberg, order an Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier at the old brewpub where it is tapped straight from the wooden cask; the malt is dried over beechwood fires, giving the beer its smoky, bacon-like depth.
  • Reach the Bastei in Saxon Switzerland at sunrise, with the Elbe 194 metres below in early light and the 1851 sandstone bridge still quiet; Rathen, across the river, is the gentlest base.
  • Walk Görlitz with Wes Anderson in mind: the town was the main location for The Grand Budapest Hotel, and a vacant department store was dressed as the hotel itself.
