Fuerteventura

Long golden beaches, volcanic landscapes and Atlantic winds give Fuerteventura a wilder, more spacious character than many classic beach islands.

Hidden places

Visit Ajuy for its black beach, old lime kilns and sea caves, but treat the surf as scenery: currents on the west coast can be dangerous.

Year-round sunshine is possible; spring and autumn are especially comfortable for beaches and exploring.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Take the boat from Corralejo to Isla de Lobos, a protected islet about 20 minutes offshore, for a flat 4-kilometre walk to its lagoons and lighthouse. The island is a natural park, so arrange the visitor permit in advance.
  • Taste Queso Majorero, the goat's cheese with a protected designation of origin since 1996, at the Museo del Queso Majorero in Antigua; versions rubbed with paprika, oil or gofio show how varied it can be.
  • Drive to La Entallada lighthouse for a dramatic east-coast viewpoint that many resort itineraries skip.
  • Cofete feels genuinely remote: check road and weather conditions and whether your rental contract covers unpaved tracks – or leave the car and take the regional TIADHE bus from Morro Jable.
