Florence

Renaissance frescoes in quiet refectories, artisan workshops in Oltrarno and Brunelleschi's dome above terracotta roofs — Florence rewards an unhurried, curious eye.

Historic places

Ring at the plain door on Via XXVII Aprile for the Cenacolo di Sant'Apollonia: in this former convent refectory, Andrea del Castagno's Last Supper of around 1447 is usually seen in near silence.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Do not drive into Florence’s historic centre: it is a ZTL, a limited traffic zone monitored by cameras, and visitors rarely qualify for a pass. Park outside the zone and walk, or pick up your rental car only when you leave the city.
  • Eat lampredotto as Florentines do, from a street kiosk: the cow's fourth stomach, slow-cooked, sliced into a bread roll and dressed with salsa verde or a spicy sauce.
  • Climb to San Miniato al Monte for evening vespers, when the Olivetan monks, here since 1373, sing Gregorian chant; afterwards their shop sells the liqueurs, honey and herbal teas they make.
  • Look for the small arched buchette del vino in palace walls: from 1559 families could sell wine directly through them, and in plague years they allowed trade without contact. A few pour again today.
