Denmark

Denmark pairs clean-lined cities and island coastlines with design, cycling culture and a food scene rooted in seasonality and everyday quality.

Architecture

Below Frederiksberg's Søndermarken park lie the Cisterns, a 19th-century drinking-water reservoir drained in 1981 and now a dark, dripping gallery that a new artist transforms each year.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Cycle between towns on Denmark’s signposted national routes: look for blue signs with a white route number in a red square. The eleven national routes run north–south and east–west, and ferries between islands generally take bikes.
  • On Bornholm, order Sol over Gudhjem at a smokehouse: alder-smoked herring on rye with chives, radish and a raw egg yolk as the 'sun'. The island's first smokehouse opened in Gudhjem in 1866.
  • Be in Denmark on 23 June for Sankt Hans aften: bonfires are lit on beaches and lakeshores and everyone sings Drachmann's Midsommervisen. A straw witch often tops the fire, a custom only from around 1900.
  • Copenhagen's Round Tower (1642) has no stairs to the top but a 209-metre spiral ramp, built so carts could haul books and instruments; in 1716 Tsar Peter the Great is said to have ridden up on horseback.
