Travel by Ildy tips
- Use Da Nang as a base for Hoi An, about 30 km to the south; allow 45 minutes to an hour by taxi or ride-hailing car. Go in the late afternoon, when the old town’s lanterns and riverside lights come on, and return after dinner.
- Order mì Quảng from a neighbourhood stall: wide rice noodles over fresh herbs with just a little turmeric-tinted broth, peanuts and a toasted sesame rice cracker. It comes from Quảng Nam, so this is home ground.
- Reach the Marble Mountains just after opening and climb Mount Thủy, the only summit you can scale; the cave shrines, including the Huyền Không grotto, feel entirely different before the heat and the tour groups.
- Each of the five Marble Mountains is named for an element, metal, water, wood, fire and earth; and on weekend nights the Dragon Bridge over the Han River breathes fire and water.
