Czechia

Czechia extends far beyond Prague through spa towns, forested highlands, Renaissance squares and a deeply regional beer and food culture.

Architecture

Below Prague Castle, wander Nový Svět, a short cobbled lane of small houses tucked behind Loreta; it feels like a village, and few of the castle crowds find their way in.

April to June and September to October are ideal for cities and regional travel; December is atmospheric but busy in Prague.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Take a train from Prague’s main station to Kutná Hora, about an hour to the east. The silver-mining town’s centre, St Barbara’s Cathedral and the Sedlec church have been UNESCO-listed since 1995, so it works well as an unhurried day trip.
  • Chlebíček, the Czech open sandwich made to be eaten in a few bites, is credited to Jan Paukert, who opened his delicatessen on Národní třída in 1916; order two or three at a traditional lahůdky counter.
  • Sleep in Telč and walk its arcaded, UNESCO-listed square at dusk, then circle the Štěpnický and Ulický ponds that once guarded the town; their banks give the calmest views of the gables.
  • At Litomyšl Castle, look closely at the walls: around 8,000 sgraffito panels, each with its own motif; Bedřich Smetana was born in 1824 in the castle brewery next door.
