Cuba

Havana's harbour fortresses and arcades, Trinidad's sugar valley and the tobacco fields beneath Viñales' limestone mogotes: Cuba's history is written into its landscapes and its music.

Hidden places

From Trinidad, head into the Valle de los Ingenios, once dotted with more than 70 sugar mills; at Manaca Iznaga a 45-metre tower from 1816 still rises above the old slave quarters.

November to April is cooler and drier; hurricane season, shortages and transport conditions require current, flexible planning.

Travel tips

Travel by Ildy tips

  • Stay in a casa particular, a licensed private room in a Cuban home, rather than a hotel: look for the blue sign marking houses allowed to host foreigners, and keep your passport (not a copy) ready, as hosts must register every guest.
  • In the Viñales Valley, UNESCO-listed for its traditional tobacco growing, visit a family vega among the mogotes to see how the leaf is grown and dried before you buy a single cigar.
  • Go to Havana's Callejón de Hamel on a Sunday, when rumba fills the alley that painter Salvador González Escalona turned into an Afro-Cuban open-air gallery of murals and sculpture.
  • At 9 pm, a cannon fires from La Cabaña across Havana harbour: the cañonazo recalls the colonial signal that closed the city-wall gates and the chain across the harbour mouth.
